Edition 6

The fifth edition of the SBE Student Challenge invited students to design sustainable cycling infrastructure at the Royers Lock and Droogdokkenpark in Antwerp. To inspire the students, we organized a site visit, allowing them to experience the location up close and create a unique design during the two workshop days at SBE’s headquarters.

The fourth edition of the SBE Student Challenge invited students to develop a new, contemporary design for the “le Jambon de la Semois” viewpoint, taking into account technical, landscape, and aesthetic aspects. Unlike editions 1 and 2, but similar to edition 3, several workshop days were organized for the participants at the SBE offices, where they could work on their designs.

The Pont Capitte, one of the many bridges crossing the Canal du Centre Historique in the city of La Louvière, is in urgent need of replacement for technical reasons. A new bridge offers opportunities to improve the urban and landscape integration of the bridge and its surroundings, while of course showing due respect for this unique environment, which is recognized as UNESCO World Heritage.

In 2022, higher education students took on the design challenge for the Vijfstraten cycling bridge in the station district of Sint-Niklaas, a missing link that is part of the development of the F4 cycling highway between Ghent and Antwerp.

In 2021, participants took on the design challenge for the cycling bridge over the Leie in Zulte. The bridge needed to be conceived with a view to the future construction of similar bridges along the Leie. In other words, the bridge would serve as the starting point for a family of “sister bridges.”
