The fourth edition of the SBE Student Challenge invited students to develop a new, contemporary design for the “le Jambon de la Semois” viewpoint, taking into account technical, landscape, and aesthetic aspects. Unlike editions 1 and 2, but similar to edition 3, several workshop days were organized for the participants at the SBE offices, where they could work on their designs.
A viewpoint
Today, the viewpoint is a small clearing in the forest, approximately 15x15 meters. It is somewhat hidden within the ‘Réserve naturelle de Bohan-Membre,’ just a short distance from the N935 road. From this spot, visitors are treated to an impressive view of the romantic heritage landscape of the Semois Valley. The view is emotionally charged, revealing the entire history of the Semois at a glance. What makes this viewpoint special is its intimate character, which sets it apart from its more famous neighbor, “Le Tombeau du Géant.”
The challenge
The ambition is to make the location more attractive. This also provides a great opportunity to thoroughly examine the site from both an architectural and landscape perspective. Care must be taken to ensure that the existing qualities are at least preserved, and if possible, even enhanced. This will ensure that the final design integrates seamlessly with its surroundings.
In terms of stability, it is expected that this aligns with the desired design, resulting in a fully coherent concept. The design must be structurally realistic and buildable, though there is no need to consider budgetary constraints.
