The fifth edition of the SBE Student Challenge invited students to design sustainable cycling infrastructure at the Royers Lock and Droogdokkenpark in Antwerp. To inspire the students, we organized a site visit, allowing them to experience the location up close and create a unique design during the two workshop days at SBE’s headquarters.

The challenge
The fifth edition of the SBE Student Challenge invited students to design sustainable cycling infrastructure at the Royers Lock and Droogdokkenpark in Antwerp.
This area is currently undergoing major transformation and is characterized by its unique qualities, particularly the scale of the site and its maritime heritage. At present, the site is a large construction zone, but in the future it will serve as an important pivot point between the city and the port area.
This gateway function, combined with the site’s attractiveness, requires carefully planned and conflict-free infrastructure. Vulnerable road users play a prominent role here. Their routes must be designed to be comfortable, safe, and legible, ensuring the site functions optimally in the future. In this context, the design of cycling bridges and tunnels is particularly crucial.
