Students and experts in action: A day full of creative ideas

Students and experts in action
On Friday, February 21, 2025, the second workshop day of the fifth edition of the Student Challenge took place at the headquarters of engineering firm SBE in Sint-Niklaas. This year, students took on the challenge of creating innovative designs for cycling bridges and tunnels around the Royers Lock in Antwerp.

The day began with a warm welcome: the students enjoyed a delicious breakfast and had the opportunity to meet some of our Experts At Play. These experienced professionals would guide and coach them throughout the day as they further developed their concepts.

After breakfast, an engaging presentation on architecture and structure inspired the students and helped them refine their designs. The teams then worked in small groups at the office. With guidance and valuable feedback from SBE professionals, they further developed their ideas, focusing on functionality, aesthetics, sustainability, and integration into the urban environment.

During the intensive design process, there was also time for relaxation and networking. During lunch, the students enjoyed a varied selection of sandwiches, wraps, and quiches. Thanks to the beautiful weather, they were able to eat together outside in the garden, creating a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.

“Innovation arises where creativity and expertise meet.”

In the afternoon, the students attended an inspiring presentation on materialization, after which they could continue developing their concepts using the insights gained. The day concluded with an interactive session where students could ask questions and further discuss their ideas. Finally, an informal after-drink allowed students and professionals to chat in a relaxed setting, reflect on the day, and exchange experiences.

This workshop day not only provided a valuable learning experience, but also offered the opportunity to build connections and collaborate on innovative and sustainable solutions. Onward to the finale in March!
