Kick-off & start of registration

Kick-off

The kick-off of the SBE Student Challenge took place the day before yesterday, on February 22. Thomas Catrysse (SBE) opened the session with an introduction, explaining the setup and objectives of our design competition. Sven Taeldeman (Province of East Flanders) then provided further insights into the ambitions for cycling infrastructure in Flanders.

Next, several of our #expertsatplay shared their perspectives:

• An Schoenmaekers: Architecture

• An-Sofie Lierman: Geotechnics

• Pieter De Blende: Landscape

• Ronan Pieters: Steel Structures

They presented the story behind the Vijfstraten bicycle bridge design as developed at SBE, each from their own discipline but with a focus on their collaborative dynamics. The session concluded with some practical information about the design competition.

Fun fact about the assignment: the city aims to realize a compelling design for the new neighborhood park (at the intersection with Nieuwe Molenstraat) together with the students.
